“Opportunities, Advocacy, and the Way Ahead” June 6-8, 2010
The 2010 Annual Meeting of UNA-USA’s Council of Chapters and Divisions was held June 6-8, 2010, in Washington, DC at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and the SEIU buildings. The meeting allowed for enthusiastic discussion on the upcoming strategic alliance with the United Nations Foundation and panels on topics including nuclear proliferation, human rights, climate change, and the Millennium Development Goals. It was a great weekend for UN supporters to build skills within their regional chapters, discuss key issues, and advocate for our nation to play a larger role in UN and global policy-making.
“Day on the Hill”, June 9, was dedicated to UNA-USA members meeting with their Congressional representatives and staff to advocate for stronger support on prominent global initiatives and treaties such as the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) and the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START). Although the Obama administration has made positive strides in aligning America’s global policy with the UN, further cooperation between the U.S. and the UN is needed and necessary. “Day on the Hill” was a great way to push towards this goal!
