Human Trafficking in Iowa

The Cedar Valley United Nations Association (CVUNA) is hosting a program on Human Trafficking in Iowa to be held on Monday, October 21, 2013 from 7:00-8:30 p.m. in the large conference room at the Cedar Falls Public Library. The program is free and open to members of the public.

Cathy O'Keeffe, Executive Director of the Braking Traffik organization, will discuss forms of human trafficking, domestic sex trafficking of children, the role of the internet in sex trafficking, ending demand, and initiatives of Braking Traffik. Braking Traffik is a Quad Cities based anti-sex trafficking non-profit that covers Iowa and western Illinois. It provides trafficking awareness information, training, legislative advocacy and coordination of services for survivors of sex trafficking. It has developed an awareness program for middle and high school students called, "Traffik Jam" which they plan to more widely disseminate in the 2014-15 school year.

Michael Ferjak is a senior criminal investigator within the Iowa Department of Justice Office of the Attorney General. In law enforcement since 1976, he has worked as a patrol officer, Chief of Police and with the Department of Justice in Iowa. In 2004 he was placed on permanent assignment to the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation's (DCI) Cyber-Crime Unit. In 2012 he was selected to lead the Iowa Department of Justice Human Trafficking Enforcement and Prosecution Initiative (HTEPI) and he is assigned to the DCI Special Crimes Unit Human Trafficking Squad.

In cooperation with the CVUNA, the program is co-sponsored by the Cedar Falls American Association of University Women (AAUW), the Waterloo AAUW, Waverly AAUW and the Peace and Justice Center of the Cedar Valley.
