UN Day Celebration with the Western North Carolina Chapter

Thursday, October 24, 2013
After this rainy summer in Western North Carolina it may be difficult to remember that access to adequate safe water is a major problem for millions of the world's people. In celebration of UN Day the WNC Chapter of the United Nations Association will raise awareness of this global issue with Water Is Life, a special evening at the White Horse Black Mountain on Thursday, Oct. 24 at 7 p.m.

Entertainment will include music from Asheville world jazz favorites Free Planet Radio, Blue Ridge Parkway poet laureate Laura Hope Gill of Lenoir-Rhyne University's graduate writing program, and others. Also on hand will be representatives of Engineers Without Borders, an NGO that serves the needs of disadvantaged communities all over the world through engineering solutions.

The organizers are also structuring the event to provide opportunities for multilogue and exchange of ideas. For example, there will be an chance for the the audience to direct questions via SKYPE to a UN water expert.

The United Nations is highlighting worldwide water issues during the 2005-2015 Water Is LIfe Decade. The Asheville area has a long history of engagement with the world community, and the Water Is Life event is a place to do just that in an atmosphere of good company and fine entertainment.
