Background

For the last several years, UN peacekeeping has undergone major peacekeeping reforms including implementation of the Global Field Support Strategy (GFSS). This five-year project, which the U.S. has strongly supported and is several years underway, has quickened the start-up of missions, improved the provision of physical support to field missions, and increased accountability and transparency. Ameera Haq will give an update on this ongoing effort along with the cost savings already achieved.  Victoria Holt will discuss U.S. perspective on this peacekeeping reform initiative and others and how they, along with peacekeeping missions in general, promote American interests.

The Council of Organizations (COO) is an initiative of UNA-USA. The COO is a coalition of nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) and local groups of organizations with interests in education, peace and security, social justice, human rights, health and women's issues that all share the common goals of making the American public more knowledgeable about global issues and strengthening the U.S. – UN relationship. Membership and information for the COO can be found at www.unausa.org/coo.

The Better World Campaign works to foster a strong, effective relationship between the United States and the United Nations through outreach, communications, and advocacy. We encourage U.S. leadership to work constructively through the United Nations and to strengthen the United Nations’ ability to carry out its invaluable operations around the world.
