Solutions for a More Welcoming World: Defending the Rights of Refugees Through the United Nations

Davis Chapter

Sunday, October 28, 2012
Location: Davis, Cali.

On Sunday, October 28 at 3 p.m. UNA Davis will celebrate the 67th anniversary of the United Nations at International House, 10 College Park, Davis with a program focused on the work of the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC).

The speaker is Ryan Kaminski, currently the Leo Nevas Human Rights Fellow with the United Nations Association.  In September, he was involved in a private briefing with Permanent U.S. Representative to the Human Rights Council Ambassador Eileen Donahoe as a member of the UNA-USA Leo Nevas Human Rights Task Force.  Kaminski was awarded the Jal Pavry Award for research in peace and international understanding from Columbia University in 2009 and the Leo Nevas Young Advocate for Human Rights Award in 2011.  He obtained his bachelor of arts degree from the University of Chicago and holds a master’s degree in international affairs from Columbia University.

With the ever-increasing number of refugees in today’s world, the work of the UNHCR and UNHRC is critical.  Learning more about the functions and interaction of these United Nations agencies from someone who deals with them on a daily basis will help the audience realize the crucial role the UN plays in seeking solutions for the enormous human rights issues of this century.  The presentation is intended to take the audience beyond mere statistics to a point of greater understanding of what it means to be a refugee and of the challenges faced in guaranteeing every individual’s human rights.

UNA members and the general public are invited to a reception to meet Ryan Kaminski at 3 p.m. in the Community Room of International House, followed by the program at 3:30.  There will be time for questions and answers at the conclusion of the talk.

There is no charge, but donations will be gratefully accepted.

Co-sponsoring with UNA are International House, the American Association of University Women and the League of Women Voters.
