GCDC cultivates literacy and leadership as students explore important topics such as peacekeeping, sustainable development and human rights. During in-class mini-simulations of the United Nations (UN) Security Council and other UN organs, students tackle global issues and concerns including poverty, refugee protection and the environment as they role-play countries, interest groups, and non-governmental organization positions. GCDC is implemented by the United Nations Association of the National Capital Area (UNA-NCA) and is a part of a nationwide initiative of the United Nations Association of the USA to bring Model UN into urban public schools. Using special curricular materials, up-to-date online and print resources, and comprehensive support and training for participating teachers, GCDC brings this experience to DC metropolitan area schools in dynamic ways.
