UNA Women Champion for Women Empowerment at the 2013 Annual Meeting

June 21, 2013|by Tanisha Dyall, UNA Women
Women’s empowerment has gained renewed attention across the globe! From the creation of the U.S. National Action Plan on Women, Peace, and Security, to 2013 G8 discussions on violence against women, the need for society to open the doors to positions of influence within their societies is being realized.

In the spirit of this global movement, the UNA-USA Affinity Group UNA Women held three events in support of women’s empowerment at UNA-USA’s Annual Meeting earlier this month including a strategy session, an informational session educating UNA-USA members on how they can get involved with UNA Women, and a briefing on UN Women’s priorities, featuring Kristin Hetle, Director of the Strategic Partnership Division at UN Women. Each of these events informed volunteers about women’s empowerment issues and identified opportunities for their individual and collective engagement. Hetle captured the essence of UNA Women’s mission and the core of its members’ activism when she noted that, “women’s full participation in any society is paramount to its overall development strategy.”

UNA Women seeks to mobilize Americans to support the full participation of women in all aspects of society. UNA Women supports the UN’s work on gender equity and women’s empowerment through its advocacy efforts in Washington, DC and across the United States.

Those interested in taking a leadership role advocating for gender equity and women’s empowerment in their communities should consider volunteering as their Chapter’s UNA Women Lead. If you are interested or know someone who is, please contact Laura Giroux at lgiroux@unausa.org.
