UN Day Commemorated with Events Nationwide

November 1, 2011
Thousands gathered around the country as UNA-USA chapters celebrated UN Day 2011. More than 80 chapters held 130 events in 34 states. All events were built around the UN Day 2011 theme: The United Nations: In Everyone’s Interest. Events ran from mid-October through early November, and included parades, rallies, fairs, festivals, dinners, and a number of speaking engagements.

Officials from the UN, the U.S. Department of State, UNA-USA and the UN Foundation were among the featured speakers. Topics being discussed featured: U.S. – UN Relations; UN Peacekeeping; the UN Security Council; the Millennium Development Goals; Model UN; the Arab Spring; Climate Change; Energy; Intercultural Exchange; and Education.

“UN Day gives a voice to the UN in communities across the U.S. Citizens care about securing peace, promoting human rights, building economic prosperity and advancing global health,” said Patrick Madden, executive director, UNA-USA. “The UN continues to respond to those in need of help during the most urgent crises, UNA-USA chapters are taking this opportunity to emphasize the UN’s critical work in the world.”

This year’s UN Day occurred amid data from a recent Better World Campaign survey conducted, which found that more than eight out of ten voters (86%) say it is important that the United States maintain an active role within the United Nations.
