Despite some progress at the UN, challenges to ensuring respect for LGBT universal human rights remain, including criminalization of same-sex relationships in nearly eighty countries. Human rights advocates are working to realize and protect the rights of LGBT individuals around the world.

Marking The Day of Silence for LGBT rights in the U.S., join us for remarks and a Q&A session with Marianne Mollmann and Dr. Heather Collister. Mollmann, based in New York, will detail the international landscape of violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Dr. Collister, based in Geneva, will discuss efforts to advance LGBT rights in the context of the UN and particularly the UN Human Rights Council.

About our speakers:

Ms. Mollmann previously was a senior policy advisor with Amnesty International's International Secretariat where she focused on freedom of expression and sexual rights issues, and a women's rights researcher and advocate with Human Rights Watch. She is the former co-coordinator of the Women's Working Group of the International Network for Economic Social and Cultural Rights and the former executive director of the Network in Solidarity with the People of Guatemala (NISGUA).
