Title: The United States and the United Nations at 72.
Featured Speaker: Dr. Albert Celoza

After the Second World War, the United States, the sole remaining world power, was most influential in founding the United Nations. The UN Charter has made a commitment "to maintain international peace and security, to develop friendly relations among nations based on respect for the principle of equal rights and self-determination of peoples, and to achieve international co-operation in solving international problems of an economic, social, cultural, or humanitarian character, and in promoting and encouraging respect for human rights and for fundamental freedoms for all without distinction as to race, sex, language, or religion." Has the United Nations achieved these lofty goals? What is the role of the United States in the United Nations in the current global political scene?

Southern Illinois University Chapter

Tuesday, October 24, 2017

About this event: Southern Illinois University is passionate about being a sustainable entity, as we have once again earned a spot in the Princeton Review for being a 'green college'. SIU's sustainability office will be invited to promote recycling initiatives and talk about environmental concerns. Additionally, our university has a farm to table initiative where our SIU agriculture students work on over 2,000 acres of farmland to produce food to be sold locally, as well as served in the dining halls. Most of the dining hall greens and ALL of the pork is from student farms. The leftover food waste is then sent to the Vermicomposting Center and reused on the farms. Coinciding with SIU's initiatives as well as the SSGs, our event will focus on sustainable and environmentally friendly practices. This can mean simply turning the lights off when leaving the room, picking up trash along the side of the road, or reusing plastic silverware! Southern Illinois has an extremely beautiful landscape and wildlife with Shawnee National Forest in our backyard, and our recent GenUn grant proposal was geared towards having a planting party on Earth Day where we plant native species and trees of the area! We will invite the United Nations Association chapter from Carbondale to enjoy and contribute to the event.
