UNA-USA, Ron Clark Academy Hosts Hundreds of Atlanta Area Students for Model United Nations ConferenceMiddle school students debate the most pressing issues facing the UNMarch 2, 2013 ATLANTA – Hundreds of Atlanta area middle school students are attending the second annual United Nations Association of the USA’s Global Classrooms® Ron Clark Academy Model UN Conference today at the Georgia Tech Research Institute Conference Center. In Model UN, students role-play as representatives from countries, interest groups, and nongovernmental organizations in simulations of UN bodies. Global Classrooms Model UN has amazed schools around the globe with its ability to cultivate global literacy, life skills, and attitudes necessary for active citizenship, showing that students deeply care about the world outside their local community. “Students’ participation in Model UN today marks the beginning of a long period of engagement between them and the United Nations,” said UNA-USA Executive Director Patrick Madden. “The Atlanta conference is part of a country-wide movement where students are showing they care about issues that go beyond their local communities, and are willing to bring down the common barriers that divide countries and cultures.” Students will discuss issues that impact the international community, such as access to medication, maritime safety, the question of Palestine, and the rights of indigenous peoples.
