John C. Whitehead School Alliance |
The Whitehead School is the first professional school of international affairs to be established since the end of the cold war. The School's namesake, John C. Whitehead, former U.S. Deputy Secretary of State, co-chairman of Goldman Sachs and then the chairman of the United Nations Association of the USA, paved the way for an exclusive partnership between Seton Hall and the UNA-USA that has carved out a unique place for the School within the realm of international affairs education. Through this partnership, UNA-USA and the Whitehead School strive to prepare the next generation of global leaders.
In 1997, UNA and Seton Hall University formed a partnership to establish the John C. Whitehead School of Diplomacy and International Relations at Seton Hall University, just 14 miles from New York City, to advance the study of contemporary global issues. Today, the Whitehead School provides students from around the world with the knowledge and skills that are essential for careers in diplomacy, public service, business, law and the nonprofit sector. The school's alliance with UNA has led to an innovative curriculum that combines academic study with the opportunity to experience firsthand multilateral diplomacy.
The School's namesake, John C. Whitehead, a statesman, war hero, business leader, and philanthropist is a model for the School's students, having demonstrated the highest standards of citizenship through a distinguished career of leadership. His life of service also inspires the School to uphold its guiding mission – preparing the next generation of global leaders.
Students participate in policy conferences and hear directly from UN diplomats and professionals in courses held jointly at United Nations Association headquarters in New York and on the Seton Hall campus. Through internships at the UNA-USA, the UN, and its related agencies and neighboring diplomatic missions, students contribute to research and analysis of key issues before the UN General Assembly.

United Nations Intensive Summer Study Program
Each year the Whitehead School and UNA-USA sponsor a week long United Nations Intensive Summer Study Program for graduate and undergraduate students from around the globe to explore the political dynamic and inner workings of the UN. Participants attend official sessions at U.N. Headquarters, such as meetings of the Security Council, as well as briefings at the United Nations Association of the USA.
