Global Classrooms Publishes Its Newest Human Rights Curriculum

By Jason Williams

Aug. 4, 2010 -- As a key component to UNA-USA's Leo Nevas Program on Human Rights, Global Classrooms is publishing a new edition of its human rights curriculum unit for middle school and high school students this month, in time for the new school year.

The curriculum unit maintains its strong focus on the Model United Nations format while providing comprehensive instruction on the most important human rights issues in the world today, from basic human rights concepts and debates to the responsibility to protect doctrine.

The curriculum consists of a teacher's guide and multimedia tools to download online and a CD. The unit can be adapted for students in grades 6-12 and is composed of five sections: introduction, Model UN skills, lessons, handouts and a glossary, with each section divided into three to four lessons. The curriculum can be used in its entirety or used selectively by topic or skill emphasis. While some lessons can be completed in a single class period, others can require multiple periods.

In keeping with UNA-USA's mission to build understanding of the UN among the American public, hundreds of CDs containing the human rights unit will be distributed free to participating Global Classrooms cities. Retail versions of the curriculum unit will also be available through Amazon.com and barnesandnoble.com.

First published in 2003, the revised human rights curriculum unit was made possible through the generous support of Newman's Own in recognition of the life and work of Leo Nevas, a staunch supporter of human rights causes and UNA’s longest-serving board member; he died in 2009. The Leo Nevas Program on Human Rights began in 2007 under Nevas’s leadership and his good friend Paul Newman, supporting UNA's efforts to promote human rights through education and advocacy.

Jason Williams is the coordinator of media resources and outreach at UNA’s Global Classrooms and a graduate student at the Polytechnic Institute of New York University.
