In Washinton, UNA Takes Part in a Malaria-Prevention Event
Sept. 23 -- On Sept. 11, 2009, Susan Rice, US ambassador to the United Nations; Kathy Calvin, executive vice president of the United Nations Foundation and UNA-USA board member; and Karen Mulhauser, president of UNA’s National Capital Area Division, joined about 70 Washington-area Global Classrooms students at an anti-malaria workshop presented by the UN Foundation’s Nothing but Nets campaign.

The event was held at the School Without Walls High School in Washington and was part of the first National Day of Service and Remembrance.
“Today, for the first time, Americans across the country are marking 9/11 as a National Day of Service and Remembrance,” Rice said. “They are extending a helping hand to their neighbors, both in the country we all love an in the world we all share.”
Students were encouraged to work within their communities to help raise awareness and money for the Nothing but Nets campaign, which provides assistance to African families to reduce malaria infections.
Malaria infects more than 500 million people worldwide each year, killing more than 1 million. The disease is a leading killer of children in Africa, where 90 percent of malaria deaths occur. Every 30 seconds, a person in Africa dies from a malaria infection.
Nothing but Nets is a global grassroots campaign that delivers long-lasting insecticide-treated bed nets to families in Africa. Bed nets have been proven to be a cost-effective method of preventing the spread of the disease.
