Empowering Women and Girls: CSW62 at the United Nations

The exhibition Women Artists: Creative Energy for Peace ushered me into an amazing CSW62 experience. Organized by the country of Andorra, this exhibition showcased wonderful artwork by female artists from around the globe. On the first day of CSW62 I had the privilege of viewing these women’s artwork. These talented women came from five continents – united by a unique desire “to see, to speak and to create.” To them, gender equality and gender parity can be achieved by sharing their view of the world through their creativity allowing them to create a space where women are at par with men.

While taking in the expansive and beautiful grounds of the United Nations in New York, one cannot help but marvel at the diversity of the people who stood in line to gain entry. Since 1946, member states of the United Nations, world leaders and activists from around the world have gathered as an international body to attend the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women. Here they discuss women’s empowerment and gender inequality issues, and this year, the priority theme is challenges and opportunities in achieving gender equality and the empowerment of rural women and girls. Women artists are part of a larger coalition of women passionate about these issues. Their desire to ensure peace through art is what drives them, and this motivation can be seen in their amazing display at CSW62.
