After a decade-long absence, on June 8, a hand-delivered letter from the State Department to UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay requested consideration for United States reentry to the United Nations Educational, Social, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).  For many decades, the U.S. was an active member in the world’s largest cultural and scientific agency, but since 2011, the U.S. has been on the sidelines.
