Kate Chang
Kate is a professor of legal studies and a dedicated human rights advocate. She has traveled extensively and has experience with litigation, academic research, and policy projects.
Currently, Kate runs the Legal Studies program for American River College in Sacramento and lectures at the Northwestern California University School of Law on a variety of subjects including Constitutional Law.
Prior to that, Kate practiced commercial litigation law with a large law firm in Arizona. During that time, she successfully represented an Egyptian woman who was seeking asylum in the United States on the basis of religious persecution. After leaving the law firm, Kate worked on a variety of socio-legal scholarship projects that analyzed how the law can be used to either advance (or undermine) gains made by civil society organizations in developing and post-conflict countries. In particular, these research projects focused on issues of human rights, women’s rights, and poverty alleviation in Bangladesh, Liberia, and Nigeria. Kate has also conducted project work for two refugee organizations including advocacy work for the International Rescue Committee in Northern California and legal policy work for Asylum Access.
Kate has been a committed member of UNA-USA for nearly 7 years, first in the East Bay and now as a leader in the Sacramento community chapter.
She holds a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Arizona and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from UC San Diego.
