Chapter Spotlight: UNA City College of New York

The UNA – City College of New York campus chapter is newly revived and my history with the chapter started during the 2016 UNA Leadership Summit. The experience I had at the Leadership Summit motivated me to bring the wonderful UNA resources to the City College campus and share the importance of advocacy among young leaders. The Executive Board of UNA-CCNY consist of four hard-working young women, who work as a team with equal amount of responsibilities in each role. We recruited over 50 active members through our social media pages and hosting various GenUN activities around campus.

The biggest event we hosted this year was the Human Rights Summit, where 10 GenUN members addressed various different human rights issues and provided concrete recommendations on possible solutions. Guest Speakers for the event included Mr. Ravi Karkara, Senior Advisor Strategic Partnership and Advocacy To the Assistant Secretary-General/Deputy Executive Director of UN-Women, as well as Mr. Ryan Kaminski, Senior Program Manager: Human Rights and Special Initiatives at United Nations Foundation. The purpose behind this summit was to get youth involved and engage them in a dialogue that is directly related to the work of United Nations.

Aside from being advocates for human rights issues, our members are very focused on spreading awareness about the ongoing refugee crisis. We hosted several bake-sales on campus and raised over $200 for the Adopt-Future-Campaign to support quality education for refugee children.

An upcoming GenUN event our chapter will be holding this academic year is a Career Development Workshop, which is open for all students and young professionals to help them build their resume, public speaking, and advocacy skills.

My favorite part about Membership Madness was being active on social media and sharing about our events and GenUN activities. The UNA-CCNY chapter is unique because of our diverse workforce, and it makes us more productive, collaborative, and active as a team.
