Getting Involved, Staying Involved: UNGA 2014
Reflecting on the 69th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) means preparing to stay engaged for the next 15+ years. As the MDGs near their final days, ministerial heads and high ranking officials are increasingly interested in the Post-2015 development agenda including design and implementation of the Post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and like-minded aims touching billions of people across the planet, including
• Universal Free and equal access to primary education;
• Poverty Eradication by 2030;
• Gender equity before society and the law;
• Ending the HIV/AIDS epidemic by 2030;
• Concrete action against climate change.
The United Nations increasingly serves as a platform to discuss problems affecting populations at various scales (local, regional, national, etc.); as arguably the most diverse institution in the world, these discussion bring views, experiences, and opinions as diverse as the United Nations itself. Now, as the most interconnected generation in history, it is of equal importance that you are able to join the conversation. I have returned to the United Nations (after a week spent on the West Coast) to join in discussions surrounding the UN Third Committee. This year the Third Committee agenda intends to discuss important challenges, including:
• Social Development;
• Crime Prevention;
• The rights of children and women;
• The rights of indigenous peoples; &
• The elimination of racism.
