Statement on the Passing of Ambassador William Luers
Former President, UNA-USA
The United Nations Association of the USA (UNA-USA) is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Ambassador William H. Luers, a distinguished diplomat, cultural leader, and global advocate. His decades of service to the United States, to the international community, and to this Association left an indelible mark on our mission.
Ambassador Luers served as President of UNA-USA from 1999 to 2009, where he championed the belief that Americans should be connected to the work of the United Nations. Under his leadership, the Association strengthened its advocacy on Capitol Hill, expanded its reach nationwide, and reaffirmed its role as the U.S. public’s voice in support of the UN.
Timothy E. Wirth, founding President of the UN Foundation, shared: “Among his many contributions to our republic, Bill Luers played an incredibly important role in developing American and global support for the United Nations as President of the United Nations Association of the USA”
“Ambassador Luers exemplified the power of principled diplomacy and civic engagement,” said Rachel Pittman, Executive Director of UNA-USA. “His unwavering belief in the United Nations and his ability to connect American communities to its mission continues to inspire our work to this day.”
We honor his memory, his public service, and his lifelong dedication to multilateral cooperation. The UNA-USA community extends our condolences to his family, friends, and all those who were impacted by his life and leadership.
