Middle School Students from Across the Globe Convene in New York for 8th Annual International Middle School Model UN Conference

“Today these young students begin a journey that will connect them with the United Nations and its work around the world for years to come,” said UNA-USA Executive Director Patrick Madden. “At UNA-USA, we’re calling this next generation of global leaders GenerationUN, and over the next three days they will test their knowledge and skills, and work to solve the world’s problems, transforming them into global citizens.”
The first-ever U.S. Youth Observer at the UN, Brooke Loughrin, is delivering the keynote address to students from 16 U.S. states and 12 countries as part of the program. Former spokesperson for Kofi Annan, and Senior Fellow at the United Nations Foundation, Gillian Sorensen will also give remarks. Participants are role-playing as ambassadors from UN member states, interest groups, and nongovernmental organizations in a simulation of the United Nations. Topics being discussed include the global arms trade, women, peace and security, and gender science.
Global Classrooms Model UN has amazed schools around the globe with its ability to cultivate global literacy, life skills, and attitudes necessary for active citizenship, showing that students deeply care about the world outside their local communities.
