A Victory for Human Rights in the U.S.

WASHINGTON D.C., December 13, 2022: Rachel Bowen Pittman, Executive Director of the United Nations Association of the USA (UNA-USA) issued the following statement today on the passage of the Respect for Marriage Act.

“Seventy-four years ago, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) outlined that every adult has the right to marry if they choose to. Today, Congress and President Biden took a vital step in upholding our country’s ideals by aligning itself with the UDHR.

The passage of the Respect for Marriage Act guarantees that valid marriages between two individuals are given full faith and credit, regardless of a couple’s sex, race, ethnicity, or national origin.

“This act provides same-sex and interracial couples the dignity, stability, and the ongoing protection of marriage rights.”
