UNA-USA National Council Chair Paula Boland’s Statement on the January 6, 2021 Insurrection at the U.S. Capitol

On behalf of the United Nations Association of the USA (UNA-USA)’s network of chapters, UNA-USA National Council Chair Paula Boland released the following statement on the January 6, 2021 insurrection on the U.S. Capitol:

“The United Nations Association of the USA (UNA-USA) and its chapters condemn the recent assault on America’s democracy and democratic values. Storming the Capitol and disrupting the procedure of certification is not a peaceful protest.

“All elected officials and others in positions of civic responsibility must now uphold their oath to defend the Constitution, support a peaceful transition of power, and protect the rule of law. Compassion and a strong moral compass is essential to every democratic society. Yet, persecution, injustice and abuse still runs rampant and is tearing at the very fabric of civilization.

“We must ensure that we have strong institutions, global standards of justice, and a commitment to peace everywhere. (UN Sustainable Development Goal 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions).”
