The 2016 UNA-USA Leadership Summit wrapped up on Tuesday, June 14, with record-setting attendance for the four-day event.

UNA-USA Leadership Summit

The Summit kicked off on Saturday, June 11, with a human rights training (funded by the Newman’s Own Foundation) for 25 GenUN chapter leaders. At the Summit itself, more than 300 members from 30 states engaged in chapter sustainability sessions and heard from high-level Department of State officials, foreign diplomats, related NGOs, and UN representatives, while visiting a Virtual Reality station (VR) where headsets put them in a Syrian refugee camp.

In partnership with AKA Sorority and Yoobi, participants also packed 1,000 backpacks with school supplies for recently resettled refugee children throughout the United States.

The proceedings culminated in the largest-ever UNA (and UNF) Advocacy Day, with more than 200 meetings with Members of Congress and their staff.

Finally, the UNA-USA Congressional Leadership Award was presented to Rep. Sam Farr (D-CA), a longtime UNA-USA member and advocate for the UN at the Summit’s closing event.
