United Nations Association of the USA and United Nations Federal Credit Union Partner, Strengthening Support and Member Benefits

February 7, 2014

UNITED NATIONS, NEW YORK — United Nations Association of the United States of America (UNA-USA) and the United Nations Federal Credit Union (UNFCU) today announced an alliance extending UNFCU membership to UNA-USA members, who can now benefit from all of the financial products and services exclusively available to the United Nations, its specialized agency staff, retirees and their families worldwide.  The news capped UNA-USA Members’ Day, a gathering of over 800 UNA-USA members, senior UN officials, and diplomatic corps at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

The National Credit Union Administration (NCUA), UNA-USA, and UN Foundation leadership, and UNFCU Board of Directors approved the partnership in December 2013.  With nearly 140 years of United Nations support between them, the UNA-USA and UNFCU relationship arose from shared values and with the aim of furthering advocacy on behalf of the UN and service, respectively.

“This partnership offers our members direct access to the same financial brand which solely serves the United Nations community in more than 200 countries and territories around the globe,” said Chris Whatley, executive director of UNA-USA.  “With UNFCU, we have gained entry to the international, financial solutions members want, while underlining the UN experience that is at their core.”

“UNFCU has always been a forward-thinking institution with great benefits and ease of access for its members,” said Gustave Feissel, president of the Northern California Division of UNA-USA, which encompasses 11 UNA chapters in that area. Feissel, who is a UNFCU member for 50 years, retired from the United Nations as Assistant Secretary-General, relocating from New York to California. “Now, people who are members of UNA-USA can join UNFCU.”

UNA-USA members, who number more than 18,000 currently, are affiliated with 120 chapters from coast-to-coast.  Each chapter champions UN ideals through local advocacy and participation in grassroots Model UNs for college, high school and middle school students, as well as women’s and veteran-led initiatives. As a result, UNA-USA, a program of UN Foundation, has increased the visibility of the United Nations, advanced its humanitarian causes and driven citizen engagement in the United States.

“We are very excited to welcome UNA-USA members to UNFCU since both of our organizations are dedicated to the mandates of the United Nations.  This alliance represents an extension of our mission at UNFCU, which is to ‘serve the people who serve the world,’” said Pamela Agnone, senior vice president of Retail Services at UNFCU, who addressed the Members’ Day audience with Whatley, United Nations representatives, ambassadors, Non-Governmental Organizations and UNA-USA Chapter Leaders.  “We look forward to building strong relationships through our personalized service and unique offerings.”

UNA-USA members can become some of the first individuals in the United States outside of the UN, UN specialized agency staff, retirees, and family members to take advantage of EMV Chip and PIN credit cards, which UNFCU pioneered in the U.S. and are the standard in payment security in more than 120 countries.

Other first-to-market solutions to address UNA-USA member-needs include global payment card-based term life insurance, new identity theft and fraud prevention resources, award-winning home buying and other lending options available for U.S. citizens and G-4 visa holders.  Additional member benefits include youth financial literacy programs, ongoing webinars and special events on an array of topics given by UNFCU’s experienced team of personal bankers, international financial experts, and risk management specialists who work solely with the United Nations community.
